On a fabulous 30 degree Autumn day that can only be experienced in Cairns, the inaugural Greenliving Expo hosted by the Tropical North Queensland TAFE and supported by ABC regional radio was attended by close to 1000 visitors. Workshops throughout the morning included worm farming, permaculture, green motoring and of course sustainable living presented by SALA’s own Ghis Gallo.
As the awareness for a sustainable lifestyle is rapidly growing nationally, the tropical north is by no means lagging behind the cities of Australia. With a ‘green’ female (had to mention it…) mayor at the head of the newly formed regional council, Cairns is in a good position to adopt a change in attitude with regard to ongoing development. New subdivisions have been slowly eating into the mountains surrounding Cairns, and the urban sprawl is more evident than any other city of Australia. Without the population to warrant a public transport system, the need for vehicle transport is ever increasing. The regional council will soon tour the completed SALA home in Cairns.
The lightweight construction of a SALA home is ideal for the tropics. The house is elevated and insulated against the heat. It seems locals are finally starting to see that air conditioned concrete block homes are not the only option for Cairns.
Three other SALA homes are in the pipeline for Cairns and the inquiries are flooding in. With a local builder keen to construct the homes, it seems that SALA has made a good move to the tropics.
