SALA Homes Triumphs in Queensland 's Environmental Protection Agency
Sustainable Industry Awards
The surprise was genuine for Scott Elsom when his Brisbane company, SALA Homes, took out the top award at the Environmental Protection Agency Sustainable Industries Awards last night.
At a gala dinner Minister for Environment and Multiculturalism, Lindy Nelson-Carr, announced SALA Homes as the 2007 winner of the coveted Minister's Award for Climate Smart Leadership.
The small company, which has developed a range of affordable, yet environmentally sustainable houses, competed against Rio Tinto Aluminium and Anglo Coal Australia as finalists.
'SALA Homes has only two employees and a handful of contractors. Winning this award is a huge vote of confidence in SALA Homes ' achievements to date, Scott Elsom said in his acceptance speech.
'We want to influence the way houses will be built in Queensland and Australia in the future.
'Whilst sustainable housing is not something new, making it affordable for everyday Australians is. Typically, a 'green' house costs substantially more to design and build than a conventional house and is built outside the city'.
'At SALA we believe that a lone beautiful, sustainable house is not the answer. We want to drive through suburbs full of them, street after street of them.
'To change mass behaviour you need a mass solution, and SALA's range of affordable, green, architecturally designed homes is the leading solution. It is an entirely new type of building.
Every SALA home is capable of producing all of its own electricity, harvesting its own rainwater and treating all of its sewage. With water shortages and the prospect of higher energy prices in the near future, having a SALA home not only makes financial sense, but it is a positive step towards the reduction of greenhouse gases and the preservation of our environment.
