There has been quite a spell between SALA newsletters. We have been extremely busy over the past few months and unfortunately our newsletter has suffered. But here it is.
Anyone who knows of, or is associated with SALA Homes knows that one of our cheif business goal is to provide highly efficient, durable and healthy homes at an affordable price. In acheiving this we are forced to continually challenge the way that we operate.
Over the past 12 months the cost of materials in our homes has increased by over 17%. However improvements to our systems, our buying power and our designs has allowed us to absorb these increases.
While we are not the cheapest kit home on the market but we are certainly offering some of the best value for money.
This recognition follows up our win in the Energex Sustainable Building awards. For such a small company to acheive this level of recognition at this early stage of development is a huge honour.
Two of SALA's close partners were also involved in the awards.
MECU Credit Union who offer 'green' home loans at reduced rates to SALA customers were also nominated as a finalist.
MECU is a community minded Credit Union where you can be certain that all profits generated are used for the benefits of all of the Credit Union members. They offer a range of environmentally and socially responsible banking facilities, such as their Go Green Car loan and their Green Home loans which offer reduced interest rates and fees.
Biolytix, our preferred on-site sewage treatment system won their category. The Biolytix sewage treatment system is a revolutionary waste treatment system that uses natural, chemical free processes to treat sewage and wastewater, converting it into clean irrigation water for the garden. The filter also breaks down sanitary items and food scraps easily. All household sewage and wastewater is fed into the Biolytix filter via standard plumbing. It is completely odourless and runs siliently.
One of the biggest issues facing local governments and residents of South-East Queensland is that of poorly designed and appointed homes. These homes are inefficient and costly to run, but more importantly, they waste valuable natural resources.
From May 1, 2006, SALA Homes commenced a Retro Fit service to assist homeowners in South-East Queensland who want to improve the energy and water efficiency of their homes, as well as reduce their household running costs.
SALA Homes has gained an enormous amount of experience in the provision of cost-effective, energy and water efficiency measures in the home. These measures include the use of specific products as well as suggestions of behavioural changes that can easily be undertaken by the homeowner without impacting their lifestyle.
What the service includes:
A 2 hour site visit to inspect your site and ascertain your requirements
A comprehensive report outlining the most cost-effective ways to achieve your desired outcomes
A list of suppliers and approximate costs of the various products recommended.
What the Retrofit service provides :
Practical advice on proven, cost-effective methods and techniques
Valuable information on products specific to your requirements and where to source them at reasonable prices.
Assistance with the sourcing and applications for government rebates associated with energy and water efficient devices
For a limited time, the new SALA Retro-fit service is available at a special introductory price of $250.

Home Page Design and Web Hosting (www.hpd.com.au) recently received a Gold award from the from the Australian Web Designers Network for their redesign of SALA's new web site. The award was judged on the following categories: Graphics, Artwork, Layout, Navigability, Functionality and Originality.
The original web site was set up in 2004 and was a 'rush job' to cater for the huge amount of interest generated in the SALA Home designs. We have been able to learn from our first web site experience and developed, with the help of the team at Home Page Design and Web Hosting, what we now believe to be a much more functional and informative site.
The new look SALA web site now includes a photo gallery showing images of a number of homes and the features in those homes. It has improved functionality and should be much easier to navigate.
In the near future video footage and floor plans of the homes will also be included on the site.
If you have any suggestions on how to improve the site further, please pass them onto us.
Proceeds from each Resource Pack purchased from the SALA Homes web site go towards the purchase of 10 square metres of Daintree Rainforest on behalf of the customer. So far this year, SALA customers have saved over 1100 square metres of priceless rainforest in the Daintree.
With the road to Cape Tribulation now bitumenised, settlement of the of the privately owned allotments within the Daintree is escalating, resulting in the on-going loss of habitat and forest connectivity. Twenty allotments were developed for rural residential housing last year.
With assistance from Rainforest Rescue, The Daintree Rainforest Foundation have purchased two properties in the past year. The Daintree Rainforest Foundation are managing these properties for their conservation values which will be protected forever. The acquisitions will contribute to a long term project to form a corridor for cassowaries in the area.
SALA will be relocating from our current offices in South Brisbane to The Green at Greenbank. This will allow us to operate from our own buildings which will allow customers and suppliers to more easily see what it is that makes our homes stand out from the crowd.
Having sales staff situated in the same location as our display homes will allow customers to view the homes anytime, rather than having to make an appointment.
So if you are visiting the southern suburbs of Brisbane, please call in and see us.
SALA Homes has a unique range of home designs that are not only good for your bank balance, but are good for the environment and society as well. As a result we are often asked to speak about our homes.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Shelley Ratcliffe. Shelley has been with us from the begining of the SALA journey and has been instrumental in many of our successes to date. Shelley has decided to reduce her workload and spend more quality time with her family. She will be sorely missed. We all wish her the best in her future endeavours.
